Judging and Judges

The Fourteeners Awards Committee assembles a celebrity panel of marketing professionals to judge our competition. Each represents a different side of the marketing community: agency or corporate. All bring significant B2B and B2C marketing experience to the table and none are current members of TMA or the Colorado Chapter of AMA.

Judging is a key reason why the these awards have traditionally been recognized as Colorado's most prestigious marketing and advertising awards competition dedicated solely to business-to-business and business-to-consumer marketing communications.

The selected judges dedicate their time and talents to participate in a rigorous process of judging the contest entries and selecting award recipients.

Each entry, in its entirety, is independently reviewed by the judges and scored against four criteria measures:

  1. Creative
  2. Execution
  3. Strategy
  4. Results

Each judge can award up to 25 points in each of these criteria measures for a possible total of 100 points. The judging scores for each entry are averaged into a total cumulative score, which is used to determine winners of Gold and Silver awards. The judges reconvene to select Best of Show, Best Creative, Best Execution, Best Strategy, and Best Results from the Gold winning entries.

Meet the Judges

Lynn Biederstadt

Lynn has been an advertising copywriter since she was 18. Starting in the mailroom of Needham, Harper & Steers in Chicago, in three months she became the youngest writer in the history of the agency.

In the years that followed, she has worked on major national accounts (and plenty of smaller ones) as creative supervisor for Ogilvy NY, associate creative director in Little Rock, and Senior Creative in Springfield MO, and Denver. With national exposure in pretty much every medium, if there’s a way to give a brand a human voice, she’ll most likely find it.

Tiffani Brendeland
Account Manager

Tiffani is an Account Manager at Meredith in the Audience Targeting department. With 15 years of experience in marketing, sales and management on the client side and agency side- she has enjoyed embracing her inner nerd working with data and insights. With her "work smarter, not harder" mentality, she brings efficiency and innovation to all aspects of her life. Tiffani graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Advertising and a designated area of concentration in diversity in a modern society.

When she is not working, you can find her spending time with her husband, Case, and two children, Elsie (5) and Elijah (3), in the thriving metropolis of Slater- where EVERYTHING IS GREATER.

Emily Canon
Senior Marketing Manager
SMA Technologies
Houston, Texas

Emily Canon has worked within business-to-business marketing for over 10 years. Currently, she is a Senior Marketing Manager within the tech space and prior to that I was a Marketing Specialist within the oil and gas industry. Canon has focused on all aspects of building a brand, building sales pipeline, and building loyal customers. Throughout her B2B career she has been the lead for executing results-oriented marketing and advertising campaigns, events, global social media strategies, and PR efforts in order to create demand. 

She received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Angelo State University and also completed the college internship program with Walt Disney World. She has been active within the ANA Business Marketing of Houston organization since 2012 serving as President for the last 2 years and on various other committees within the chapter. Outside of work she runs her photography business and helps her husband with our snow cone food trucks.

Joanna D'Avanzo
Chair, Communications Dept.
Marist College

Joanna D’Avanzo is a Professional Lecturer and Chair of the Communication Department at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY where she teaches the creative side of advertising. She came to Marist to lead their creative advertising program and has worked with colleagues to help students create breakthrough, award-winning work. Her student's work has been recognized with Young Ones awards through The One Club for Creativity and district placements at the National Student Advertising Competiton sponsored by the American Advertising Federation. She began her career as a passionate assistant art director the day after she graduated college and she now instills that same passion into her students. In Joanna’s initial year at Marist, she held the first Marist Portfolio Review in NYC, which continues each year with graduates going to top ad agencies, including R/GA, FCB, Ogilvy, Grey, McCann, mcgarrybowen, and Badger & Winters.


Before academia came calling, Joanna spent time at big NYC agencies including McCann, DMB&B, JWT and Grey, where she worked her way up to Creative Director creating campaigns for a wide range of clients including Burger King, Hasbro Games, Panasonic, Gatorade and Smuckers. Joanna’s 20 plus years in advertising has given her a depth of knowledge to pull from and relate to; she has hands-on knowledge of where her students are headed, what's in store for them and helps them prepare to get there. Joanna gives her students the advice to “Know A Little About A lot” and she takes that advice to heart which enables her to never stop learning. She loves a good typeface, finds great pleasure in helping her students explore their creativity and enjoys learning from her 3 teenage sons; they help her stay relevant in today’s ever-changing culture.


Joanna graduated from FIT with a BFA in Advertising Design and she studied graphic design at the London College of Communication. She has been involved in higher education since 2010; she has also taught at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She is a 2 time Young Ones Juror and is featured in Pat Peduto’s new book titled “I wrote the book on Advertising”. She looks forward to teaching her students all she knows about advertising.

Joan Dufresne
Joan Dufresne Brand Strategy LLC

Joan Dufresne is experienced brand strategist and specialist in brand platform, creative development and stakeholder management. She has a strong and eclectic portfolio in financial services, large retail, technology, telecom, consumer healthcare and packaged goods, luxury goods, corporate strategy, digital start-ups, sports and the arts. Clients range from Fortune 100 to individual entrepreneurs and artists.

Kayt Gabrielson

Kayt Gabrielson joined the Board of Directors in November 2015 serving in multiple membership positions. Kayt has more than 20 years of success in sales and marketing for customer-centric organizations in a variety of industries such as technology, retail, apparel, and manufacturing. Her expertise lies heavily in marketing strategy, growth strategy, business and product development, global strategy, and communications for both B2C and B2B organizations.

Kayt attained her MBA in Marketing from the University of Phoenix and her BS in Marketing from Iowa State University. Kayt currently works with multiple clients consulting in marketing strategy, project management, and branding. She has a passion for teaching and training and is currently a Lecturer for Iowa State in marketing principles and branding management courses. Kayt serves on the Board of Trustees for the Waukee Public Library and also volunteers her time with soccer organizations. If she is not working or volunteering you can find her on a soccer or baseball field cheering on her two boys or running around with her two dogs.

Carlos Hidalgo
Colorado Springs, Colorado

Carlos Hidalgo is co-founder and CEO of VisumCx, a B2B Growth Advisory Firm and serves as the Chief Strategy Officer for DemandGen International.


Carlos has over 25 years’ experience working with B2B large enterprises to start-up organizations in delivering growth strategies and programs as well as leadership coaching.  


Carlos is widely recognized for his expertise in B2B change management strategies, marketing, sales, content and demand generation and is also international speaker on how organizations need to transform in order to drive innovation and growth.


Carlos is the author of Driving Demand, which is ranked as a top 5 marketing book of all time by Book Authority and also The UnAmerican Dream, which was released in 2019. 


Carlos has won numerous awards and has named to some of the most prestigious leadership lists in the industry including the SLMA Sales Lead Management and the most Influential in B2B Marketing by Onalytica.

Stephen Hill

Stephen Hill is an orchestrator of b2b demand generation marketing programs for JLL, where he runs the Global Demand Center. 

Leveraging best-in-class tools and processes, Stephen takes a data driven approach to delivering a more personalized human experience across channels, tactics and engagements.

Stephen has the heart of an artist, the mind of an entrepreneur and the skills to deliver results at an enterprise scale.  He has a background in art and economics, enjoys food, wine, toy-making, writing, coding and most of all - his wife, kids and two dogs.

After years as a restaurant owner/operator and various tech sales roles, Stephen transitioned to enterprise b2b Marketing 10 years ago, where he has used his creativity and entrepreneurial skills to develop Demand Centers for CDW and now JLL.  

Stephen is passionate about using demand generation programs to bridge the gap between marketing and sales and ultimately help solve client problems by connecting them to the best solutions.

Ellen Linkenhoker
Insights & Strategy Leader
ITA Group

Ellen is an Insights & Strategy Leader at ITA Group. She has over 10 years of experience working for technology, software and service companies in growth phases and finds joy in exploring new ideas and thrives on disruption in all forms. She is an award-winning marketer and navigates all things channel, marketing, incentives, and tech in her role (which helps her keep a pulse on the changes in the market to direct the vision, position, and evolution of their incentives portfolio). When she’s not working or volunteering you can find her competing on the volleyball court or working on home renovation projects with her husband.

Ellen holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in Marketing with a minor in Statistics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has completed the West Des Moines Leadership Academy program, and is Pragmatic Marketing Certified-II.

Riley McLeod
Marketing and Communications Manager

Riley McLeod manages marketing and communication for Shive-Hattery’s Des Moines office. As a graduate of the University of Iowa’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, she has a passion for collaborating with both internal and external clients to effectively tell their stories.


Over the last six years, she’s had the opportunity to work on projects within education, commercial, government, industry and healthcare sectors. Riley has experience creating content to support public involvement campaigns and developing marketing and public relations plans. She specializes in defining clear marketing strategies, designing straightforward, effective visual communication tools and assisting clients’ in communicating their message to help meet long-term business objectives.

Cassandra Pudenz
Account Manager

Cassandra Pudenz is an Account Manager at Lessing-Flynn, where she develops and executes marketing strategies alongside her clients. Cassandra has over nine years of marketing experience ranging from direct-to- consumer campaigns to public relations and everything in between. She is a 2010 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing Management and minor in Graphic Communications.

Cassandra volunteers her time as Chair of the UNI College of Business Young Alumni Advisory Board, serving on the Des Moines Social Club Board of Directors and helping organize the Angel Tree program at her church. She is a graduate of the 2015 Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute Community Leadership Program. With a passion for all things marketing, Cassandra has been an active member of AMA since 2007, both with the UNI collegiate chapter and AMA Iowa. She has held roles in Communications, Programming, Treasury, and most recently, as President.

Heather Saxton

Heather Saxton is the Director of Event Marketing and Promotions for INTL FCStone Inc., a Fortune 500 company focused on providing products and services within the commodities, securities, foreign exchange and global payments sectors. In this role, Heather helps to manage the planning and strategic promotion of approximately 200 hosted seminars, conferences and customer appreciation events each year. Heather has worked in the marketing and events industry since graduating from Iowa State University in 2006 and has served on the AMA Iowa Board of Officers since 2015. Heather enjoys reading, baking, traveling, and spending time with her son, Arlo, and husband, Jon.

Kennedy Van Rossum

Kennedy Van Rossum works at Bank Iowa as a Marketing Specialist where she focuses on department process and organization, digital assets, brand development and bank-wide marketing needs. She graduated from Iowa State University in 2015 with a degree in Public Relations and a minor in Business. Kennedy and her husband also own a local photography business that she enjoys focusing on during her free time.
